Isn't it amazing how many conspiracy theories abound. Also interesting is the fact that the majority seem to come from the right. Not only that but we seem to be evolving into a Society where we adhere to two very different viewpoints of America, depending on which part of the ideological spectrum appeals. We dismiss facts as lies or propaganda, we explain away recorded words as either edited or boldly proclaim that those words were never spoken, we attack those we disagree with by name calling, character assassination and, in many cases, we manufacture facts about those of opposing viewpoints, facts which are neither true nor can be substantiated. Most of us blindly accept what we are told, what we read, what we hear without question, without applying reason. We may not act immediately but our perceptions of each other and the world we live in begins to be shaped by what can only be described as falsehoods, misinformation or biased interpretation of events and the truth.

The end result is that we interpret and assign motives and character based on anything but the facts. We engage in terminology like racism, white privilege, socialism, patriotism, without fully understanding the origins, the meaning and the application of these ideas in the modern world. Some us us even go as far as believing it is our individual duty to stand tall (long guns and all) against those who believe, look or talk differently from our idea of what a Patriotic American should be.

What is ignored is that many of the forces dividing America today have their beginnings in the very institutions and cultural values that have been with us for more than 400 years. Racism and ethnic phobia has been with us starting with the treatment of Native Americans, the justification of slavery on economic and genetic grounds, the discrimination against the Chinese, the Japanese, the Germans , Irish, etc. Institutional and cultural racism is not the providence of one party or another, it is part of our embedded belief system reinforced for hundreds of years of our interpretation of history, our education system, our interpretation of history, and our legislative actions or inactions at the local, statewide and national level.

Likewise, the wealth gap is not a new or unique idea which is only now invading our national dialogue. The distinction between those with economic privilege and those without has been with us since the dawn of mankind. Rather than assign blame to one party or the other, it is time that we recognize that we as a nation have a responsibility to help those less fortunate than others. That doesn't mean gravitating toward socialism, which I will explore in another post.
