As a first generation immigrant, I can speak with certainty and knowledge as to who we were as Americans and where we might be heading. The promise of opportunity, the human aspiration for betterment is what shaped our national self image and made us the envy of the world. It brought my family and I to this country and it continues to attract many others to this day. As a people we are a collection of indigenous people and immigrants. Most came willingly some did not. What brought us together over time was the desire to build a successful life through education, community, fellowship and shared purpose. What motivated us all was the reality of possibilities. Have we lost that sense of common purpose? Are we still the America that created so many dreams for so many people across the world? Are we resilient enough to meet the challenges of discord, political gridlock and all the other daily craziness we face? I think we are. I think that united in common purpose, united in respect for each other and united in our Humanity we, as dreamers, with aspirations for a better life can and will succeed in once again offering to the world a glimpse of who we were, and who we are. The adage that "united we stand and divided we fall" is as relevant today as it was in 1776.
