Can't have it both ways

One of the segments within the Trump "core group of supporters" is the evangelical community. I assume that members of this group are familiar with the words of Jesus that God is the person who welcomes the stranger, visits the sick and cares for the least of these. Matthew 25:40 says " Truly, I (god) tell you, just as you did it to the least of these, you did it to me".
So what are we to make of the evangelicals' support for Trump a man who demonstrates behavior that is the antithesis of those words and the teachings of Christ in general. Does partisan politics "trump" religious teachings? Are evangelicals and other religious supporters of Trump hypocrites because they support a individual who has repeatedly demonstrated his lack of compassion and his lack of a moral compass? Are we to believe that someone, who casually dismisses the death of 200,000 individuals by stating that it is a shame and then pivots and gives himself a A+ for handling the Pandemic, is someone that God,(for those who believe) would embrace? Is that what adherence of organized religion interpret the scriptures to exemplify?
How can devout individuals who every day purport to follow the teaching of Christ support a immoral individual? I would love to hear their rationale.
